With a mix of personal experiences and industry insights, Whitney, Erin, and Amanda share their thoughts on the potential benefits and challenges AI presents for our collective photography businesses. From culling programs to client expectations, we’ll dive into the impact of AI and raise thought-provoking questions about authenticity in the age of technology. Don't miss out on this informative and candid conversation that's sure to resonate.
Can our photography businesses survive in a world with AI?
There's been a lot of talk about AI potentially overshadowing the role of professional photographers, but we see this as an opportunity to highlight what truly sets us apart.
Firstly, no matter how sophisticated AI becomes, it can't replicate the depth of emotion and storytelling that we, as photographers, bring to our work. Our ability to capture the essence of a moment, the unspoken narratives behind each image, is something truly special. This is the core message we should be sharing with our clients: we're not just taking pictures; we're capturing memories, feelings, and those irreplaceable moments in life - all things that AI will never be able to understand or capture.
Our creativity is another area where we excel beyond AI. As artists, each of us has a unique perspective and approach to photography. This personal touch is something AI can't mimic. Our work is deeply personal, creative, and tailored to each client's individual story. We bring to each session our own stories, influences, biases and histories and blend those seamlessly with those of our clients’. You know what that makes us? Artists. AI is only pretending to do this; you’re the real deal.
Now, let’s make one thing really clear - AI isn’t the bad guy. It’s not the evil villain out to steal your clients. It’s a tool just like your camera and, whether we like it or not, it’s here and it’s not going anywhere. That’s why it's vital to embrace the (many, many) benefits of AI. Integrating AI into our workflows isn't about competing with technology; it's about enhancing our efficiency and allowing us more time to focus on the artistic aspects of our profession. By adopting AI smartly, we show that we're not just artists but also modern, adaptable professionals.
Remember - AI isn’t going to take your clients (but a photographer who embraces and integrates AI into their business just might).
In the end, we should see the rise and role of AI as being about merging our irreplaceable human qualities with the best of what technology offers. This approach doesn't diminish our role; it enriches it, making us more versatile and relevant in a rapidly evolving industry.
So, while we’re all a bit nervous about what tomorrow will look like, we choose to look forward to it with hope and excitement and we hope this conversation helps you do that, as well.
This week…
Take some time to list out the ways you can incorporate AI into your business and workflows - ways to essentially outsource parts of your business to AI so you can focus on doing those things that only you can do. Let that be the lens through which you view AI - it’s a tool that allows you to spend more time creating images, doting on clients and refining your craft. Let AI do the stuff it’s great at, so you can do the stuff you’re great at.
Until next week!
